Objective 3.1 Core Concepts

Identify periods, families, and elements using the periodic table.
  • Stating that the elements are defined by their number of protons
  • Locating elements within a period and family

Lesson Plans

Reading The Periodic Table
Categorize a group of shells (or other objects - rocks, nails, shoes, etc.) and unknown elements using different characteristics. Read and interpret the Periodic Table.

Classification of Matter
Students are introduced to the concept of different kinds of matter. Students create models of different substances to learn to identify the differences between elements, compounds, and mixtures.

Periodicity
Students show the historical importance of the Periodic Table as a predictive device.

Discovering Elements online
Students will work independently and in small groups to research assigned elements on the internet with sites given in advance. They will then contribute to a class database with their individual information. The database will then be made available for students to again work independently and in pairs to answer questions created from a class discussion to discover relationships about the elements. (also supports Tech COS 5, 14)

The Periodic Table
This lesson provides knowledge about periodic law, groups and periods. Students will be able to identify and label each group with their names. Students will be able to relate atomic number and atomic masses of different elements of periodic table. Students will also be able to discuss periodicity of different properties of elements.

The Structure of the Periodic Table
Students relate the structure of the atom to the structure of the periodic table and use the periodic table to form compounds.

Periodic Table Database
These lessons are designed to help students use their computer skills to create their own database using teacher directions, and they also learn how to read the Periodic Table and understand what it means. (also supports Tech COS 5)

Periodic Table Bingo
In this lesson students will learn to interpret the periodic table through a game format.

Physical properties of group 1 elements
Lab activity testing physical properties of group 1 elements (could be adapted to support Tech COS 5, 13)
