Kindergarten Science Standard 3

Relate a variety of sounds to their sources, including weather, animal, and transportation sounds.


Lessons

Students will identify loud and soft sounds; predict high and low sounds; and understand that different pitches are produced from different objects made of different materials.

When the Magic School Bus Kids play giant musical instruments, they see and feel the vibrations. Your kids can see - as well as hear - the results of vibrations in this activity. Have children work in small groups.

Suggestions for Special Education Learners:

-Match of sounds to pictures/objects.
-Identify the sounds animals/weather/forms of transportation make.
-Students will show thumbs up if they hear loud or soft sounds.
-Classify animals/weather/forms of transportation by the sounds they make (or type of sound they make...soft/loud, etc.).
-Student acts out an animal or form of transportation while the class guesses what it is.
-Point to a picture of an animal or form of transportation on a page and have the child use words or actions to identify it.
-Students will show thumbs up if they hear loud or soft sounds, pleasant or unpleasant, or high/low pitch.
-Take students outdoors and ask them to listen carefully to all the sounds around them. Later, discuss the different sounds and encourage students to make up sound words for what they heard, make a list of students' invented sound words.
